How to Pot Clivia: The Best Potting Mix for Healthy Roots and Preventing Root Rot

One of the most important rules when potting Clivias is to provide excellent drainage. Clivias have thick, fleshy roots that store water, allowing them to tolerate periods of dryness. However, their roots still need oxygen, and prolonged exposure to wet, poorly drained soil can lead to root problems. A well-draining potting mix is the foundation for healthy Clivia growth.

Over the years, we have developed our own Clivia potting mix that has worked well for us in Northern Minnesota, where Clivias are grown indoors during the winter months. Our typical mix includes:

• 1/4 peat moss-based potting mix (a quality mix from big-box stores works well)
• 1/4 perlite for drainage and aeration
• 1/4 horticultural charcoal to improve the growing environment
• 1/4 orchid bark to add structure and maintain air space around the roots

If orchid bark is not available, you can replace it with additional perlite and charcoal while maintaining a loose, well-draining mix. After watering, excess water should drain quickly, ideally within a few seconds ⁷rather than leaving the roots sitting in saturated soil.

We do not add foam nuggets or other fillers at the bottom of the pot. Since we often water our Clivias from the bottom, a layer of foam can interfere with the potting mix absorbing water upward.
