Clivia Pastel 80

Clivia typically bloom in late winter or spring after experiencing a cool, dry rest period. However, they can also flower outside their normal season when growing conditions differ. This article shares an unusual July bloom of a South African pastel Clivia, explains why it flowered without a typical cold period, and highlights the beauty of this distinctive cultivar. 

Since our plants did not receive a typical cold period, our clivia plants have started blooming in July this year. Here is Pastel 80, with more than 25 florets. I obtained it as a seedling years ago from eBay, with limited information on its parentage other than its origin in South Africa.

Its soft pastel tone sets it apart from the more common orange blooms, along with its strong umbel and impressive flower head. Pollen has been collected and will be used for future crossings.
