Monk fruit (Siraitia grosvenorii) is a unique herbaceous perennial plant belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. It is native to the southern parts of China, prevalent in the mountainous areas of Yongfu, Longsheng and Lingui Counties in northern Guangxi province. In China, monk fruit is commonly known as Luo Han Guo, Arhat fruit and Buddha fruit. Monk fruit is known throughout the world for its intense sweet taste. The plant is an herbaceous perennial dioecious vine, which means having the male and female reproductive organs borne on separate individuals. For use as a medicinal ingredient of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulations, the fruit is collected in autumn when it turns from pale green to deep green, and subsequently is dried in the open air or at low temperature for several days. The fruits are being touted as the next “stevia” for use in sugar-free soft drinks.

For sale seedlings need to harden off before transplanting. Transplant to rich hills in garden and provide trellis or use a 3 to 5 gallon pot and grow in the greenhouse. You may provide some shade, and warm/foggy conditions are best for growth and fruit maturation, which occurs about 240 days after planting. The long maturation period is one reason growers in the temperate north will want to keep this plant greenhoused. Monk fruit is harvested in the form of a green fruit, which becomes brown after drying. The major compound of monk fruit is mogroside-V, which accumulate after certain time. Generally, 80 days from date of pollination is required for accumulation of mogroside-V in fruits. Thus, the quality of fruits is largely depend on age of the fruits, and fruits should be harvested after 80 days for maintaining the quality of fruits.

The plant prefers the following cultivation conditions:
• Zone 10-12
• Heavy rainfall
• High relative humidity (high foggy climate) and sunshine hours
• High temperature difference between day and night
• Humic soil
